SHREWSBURY PUBLIC LIBRARY Shrewsbury, Massachusetts The Shrewsbury Public Library, founded in 1872, occupies the 1903 Howe Library building in the historic center of Shrewsbury. The building program calls for more than doubling the size of the facility with adequate future expansion space and parking. The proposed design removes a 1980 wing and replaces it with a larger and more sympathetic addition adjoining the original building. The massing of the addition on the site recalls the original Town Hall, now demolished, and anchors this important historic intersection. The new entrance forms a link between the original building, which will house periodicals, reading, and the Historical Room, and the addition, which will accommodate the remainder of the program spaces. The exterior of the addition will be reminiscent of the original building, using buff brick, limestone, and slate roofing. Designed in association with Adams & Smith Architects. |
